If the mother chinchilla is unable to nurse her young due to illness or death, the young can easily be placed with another lactating female. If this is not an option, the pet owner must raise the babies.
Chinchillas are known for their soft and luxurious fur, and they have nearly been trapped to extinction in their native countries; in the United States there are now over 3000 ranchers and growing populations of pet chinchillas.
